After the battle of Scarif, some in the Alliance had celebrated. It was proof that the Empire could be challenged on its own territory—outwitted, outmaneuvered, even beaten in some sense. Davits Draven saw no purpose in discouraging the fervor of those who remained.

But the victory, if it could even be called that, had come at a horrifically steep price.

I shocked myself by actually finishing the chapter of per ardua ad astra that's been moldering in GoogleDocs for ~5 years. And revising it! And posting it at AO3! If you're (...still) reading it, the new chapter is here: https://archiveofourown.org/works/9223013/chapters/119508970

The classic D&D alignments can be silly and reductive ... but they're also genuinely useful in some ways? Like, if I say "Darcy has Lawful Good energy, but is actually Neutral Good," you don't have to agree, but it gets across what I mean to people at all familiar with alignment without a long explanation. "I think some people see Cassian as X Neutral, but I think he's Lawful Good all the way through" is comprehensible in a concise way. So is "I think Leia is trying to stifle herself into living a Lawful Good life, but at heart is Neutral Good." I think that's also true of Éowyn, btw, while Jyn comes at it from the other side: living a Chaotic life, but also Neutral Good at her core (certainly not Chaotic Neutral or True Neutral).

And of course, the divisions aren't hard lines. I think Luke is probably not far from the Lawful/Neutral boundary, though still on the Neutral Good side, whereas Anakin has some of that Neutral or even Chaotic energy, but is ultimately Lawful Good -> Lawful Evil -> Lawful Good.

(I am also Very Offended by bad alignment assignments, like the gifset that assigned Darcy to Lawful Neutral. WTF, seriously.)

I wasn't able to work at cleaning up TJATSL/recording/original novel writing/academia reading for family reasons ... but I did have some fun digging into the place where my Lucy feelings and Skywalker feelings come together.

anghraine: leia looking anxiously away in esb (leia [anxious])

I finished recording The Imperial Menace, the sequel to my f!Luke AU, The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker. It’s all uploaded here. The recording matches the AO3 version here, also slightly cleaned up from the original.

Again, I don’t expect most people to be into this, but stuff to know if you are:
  • It resolves the cliffhanger at the end of Adventures, then ends on another one.
  • It runs parallel to the end of ANH and most of ESB.
  • It was first written in 2012 on a schedule, and ran into some difficulties, which is why it’s shorter and more erratic than Adventures.
  • As with Adventures, it’s based on the films and (where possible) the scripts, but not expanded universes past or present, official statements, etc.
  • Also as with Adventures, it assumes that the extreme male domination of the OT reflects in-world misogyny and patriarchy.
  • The page can take a few seconds longer than most to load.
Also, if you want to read this without reading The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker, that's mostly doable, but there is one major consequence in Adventures you'll need to know about. Cutting for the spoiler:

Ten-year-old spoiler within! )
anghraine: anakin in rots looking down; text: lost (anakin [lost])
I was thinking some more about SW ages because of a line in the Lucy recording, and going by the scripts (I'm not interested in ~official timelines or w/e):

- AOTC is explicitly 10 years after TPM
- ROTS is an unknown length of time after AOTC, though I'd think several years
- ANH is 18 years after ROTS
- ESB is an unknown length of time after ANH, though I'd think at least a year
- ROTJ is an unknown length of time after ANH, though the fact that Luke gets confirmation from Yoda in it suggests it hasn't been that long IMO, perhaps a year.

Ages:

Obi-Wan = 25 in TPM, 35 in AOTC
Padmé = doesn't actually say, only that it's been 10 years since TPM. I think the promo material said she was 14 in TPM, but that's not mentioned here.
Anakin = about 9 in TPM, about 19 in AOTC.

Luke = 18 in ANH
Leia = about sixteen in ANH, retconned to be Luke's twin, so 18
Han = about 30 in ANH

Okay, now onto some guesswork.

I finished recording The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker, the first of the main fics in my ongoing f!Luke AU. It’s all uploaded at my other corner of the Internet (thanks to [personal profile] tree) here. The recording matches the AO3 version here, which I slightly cleaned up for this.

I know it’s not most people’s thing, but stuff to know if it does sound relevant to your interests:
  • It was first posted in 2011(!), is 29k long, and runs parallel to most of ANH.
  • It’s based on the films and (where possible) the scripts, but not expanded universes past or present, official statements, etc.
  • On that note (because I get asked about it), Lucy and Leia’s age is based on the ANH script, which states that Luke is 18 and Leia is about 16. I averaged it out to 17.
  • It does end on a cliffhanger, which has long been resolved in the AO3 version, but not recorded yet.
  • I don’t do accents etc apart from my own, though I try to differentiate the voices slightly.
  • The page can take a few seconds longer than most pages to load.
anghraine: vader extending his lightsaber; text: and now for the airing of grievances! (anakin [grievances])
I'm fond of ROTJ Han/Leia, and it's difficult to miss the chemistry in ANH and ESB, but it's still weird to me when 21st-cent fandom tries to argue that Han/Leia as written in ANH and ESB is some pure unproblematic thing.

The thing is, SW official "canon" has shifted about a LOT over the years, not just w/ the Disney acquisition or whatever. While Han's treatment of Leia (esp his rejection of her clearly stated boundaries) is bad anyway until he gets over himself in ROTJ, the timeline has evolved with the various retcons. The most important of those retcons for this is making Luke and Leia twins, which makes her Luke's age. Luke comes across as pretty damn young in ANH, but was originally still a couple years older than Leia.

Specifically, Luke is 18 in the ANH script. Han is 30ish. Leia is "about sixteen."

Sixteen. When Lucas wrote Han talking about "a princess and a guy like me," he was imagining him thinking about a sixteen-year-old girl.

I replied:

Heh, thank you! I have … four pages of one. Here’s a little bit:

“You mean Erso,” said Leia, down-to-earth again.

“Jyn was like Han?” Luke exclaimed. “And then she stole the Death Star plans? See—”

“Jyn is extraordinary,” Cassian said repressively. “I wouldn’t pin your hopes on Han Solo.”

I once had a therapist who had me take the Enneagram, which was … weird, but it’s a fun system for thinking about fictional characters. I’ve been primarily using it to get original characters clear in my mind, but now it’s like … what about our faves?

Say, Darcy for me: I could see a few others, but I’m inclined to go for Type One, with features of both the healthy and unhealthy aspects:

Extremely principled, always want to be fair, objective, and ethical: truth and justice primary values. Sense of responsibility, personal integrity, and of having a higher purpose
-
Highly dogmatic, self-righteous, intolerant, and inflexible. Begin dealing in absolutes: they alone know “The Truth.” Everyone else is wrong: very severe in judgments, while rationalizing own actions

He has a weak Two wing (they can be “overbearing, patronizing, presumptuous” while Nine is reallyyy not him), but by the end, he mostly lands at just a solid healthy One:

Conscientious with strong personal convictions: they have an intense sense of right and wrong, personal, religious, and moral values. Wish to be rational, reasonable, self-disciplined, mature, moderate.

I reblogged a gifset of the death scenes of the entire Skywalker family (from Shmi to Ben), and added:

...fuck. Their story always had Greek tragedy vibes, but now it's just ... ;_; ;_; ;_;

I love the Skywalkers, but every single one of them but Shmi is a walking yikes.

People will be like, "Well, MY Skywalker is pure and unproblematic" and it's just, nah, bro. Unless you're talking about Shmi, every single one of them—in-laws included—has had some moment of total fuckery. They are my eternal loves! But some of the posts about them I see are just ... uh, wow. And I have seen those posts about every one of them.
