anghraine: a photo of emilie de ravin (a blonde, blue-eyed woman); text: lucy (lucy (emilie))
A fic meme, grabbed from[personal profile] shadaras!

Name:

Anghraine / Elizabeth

Fandoms:

Tolkien, mainly LOTR; Austen, mainly Darcy/Elizabeth; Star Wars, mainly Skywalkers and Jyn/Cassian

Where you post:

Wherever I happen to be active, but also at AO3 under anghraine.

Most popular multi-chapter fic:

Season of Courtship, the Darcy/Elizabeth engagement fic I wrote 15 years ago (but revised … maybe 7-8 years ago?). It was surpassed for a long time by some other fics, but picked up a ton of kudos/bookmarks this year for some reason, so now it’s well ahead of the rest in both bookmarks and kudos. [ETA 3/17/2024: the gap has only widened since then, idk why.]

Favorite story you’ve written so far:

That’s hard to say … I’ve written a lot. In some ways, my short P&P sequel The Letters of Elizabeth Darcy, 1796-1798 will always be a fave because it came out so closely to what I wanted it to be. But the dearest to my heart are probably always going to be my Lucy Skywalker series starring f!Luke, and my f!Darcy/m!Elizabeth fic, First Impressions.

Fic you were nervous to post:

Hmm. Perhaps Better Choice, my very flawed Faramir-goes-to-Rivendell fic, which is the first fic I posted anywhere. I thought of we get dark, only to shine because of its many taboos, but Borgias fandom was so nice that I don’t think I much worried about it, beyond hoping people would read it. IDK … I’m a very nervous person, and I definitely am on the edge of my seat after I post a fic, but I don’t think I’m usually nervous about posting fics in this sense.

How you choose your titles

They’re usually general statements of what the fic is about (“Redemption,” “Anomaly,” The Jedi and the Sith Lord), references to a quote from the canon (Season of Courtship, tolerably well acquainted), or excerpts from songs (“But Thou Didst Not Leave His Soul In Hell,” “like a storm in the desert”).

Do you outline?

Sometimes—I have some things that just start with an idea, others where it’s pretty clear in my head, but I ultimately work best when I have the structure and some details all sketched out.

Complete fics:

169, says AO3. Mostly one-shots, of course.

In progress:

Posted WIPs that I have active plans to continue at this time: once I’m writing fic again—Lucy Skywalker, tolerably well acquainted, and Fíriel (f!Faramir) are at the top of my list!

Posted WIPs that I have given up on: I’m terrible at really giving up on things, tbh. I always have scraps that I poke at and things like that. Such Terms of Cordiality is vanishingly unlikely, though.

Exchange fics due soon/unrevealed: none. I had the sense (speaking for myself) not to do exchanges this year.

WIPs that live in my fanfic folder and are incomplete and who knows when they’ll be finished: not a whole lot, actually, in the sense of things that haven’t been posted. I mostly do post my WIPs. I’ve got the companion fic to my Darcy-Fitzwilliam headcanons in the folder—we’ll see how that goes.

Coming soon/not yet started: hahahaha, nothing. I’ve got quite enough to be going with.

Do you accept prompts: not exactly, these days. I don’t mind them, and if they inspire me, I’m glad to write when I can spare the time, but at this point they don’t usually kickstart me and I just feel vaguely guilty when they do but I don’t have the time/energy, so I don’t actively invite them.

Upcoming story you are most excited to write:

It’s not a story, but there’s a scene in the Fíriel-Éowyn-Merry fic that I’m reallyyyyy looking forward to (though it only has Fíriel and Éowyn in it).

anghraine: shmi in tpm; text: full of grace (shmi [gratia plena])
I reblogged a photomanip of Shmi Skywalker dying in Anakin's arms, and Anakin himself dying by Luke, and tagged it:

#rotj came out three years before i was born and yet ... I'm still suffering .......

[ETA 10/3/2023: This never changes ;_;]

anghraine: carrie fisher and mark hamill grinning widely; text: laughing & half-divine (luke and leia [laughing and half-divine])
ronear on Tumblr sent an ask:

Do you you still take Star war prompt? Anakin is the son of the Force. Which can be considered some sort of powerful eldritch entity. So the Skywalkers are one too. Including all those disturbing and horrifying things that come with them.

I replied:

I’m always happy to talk about SW!

I would say that there are a lot of ways to interpret Anakin’s exact relationship to the Force/conception, and it’s possible to fairly interpret it differently. I mean, I think things like “Shmi was lying” are taking the cheap way out, but other than that.

Personally, I do headcanon that Anakin is effectively the son of the Force and that it creates a slightly … off strain in him and his descendants. (I recently-ish wrote this into a fic!) I also headcanon that this was part of why Padmé was so drained by her pregnancy.

That said, I don’t see the Force as a negative power in the universe overall, so I don’t think it makes them act in disturbing and horrifying ways (Exhibit A: Leia), though it’s one of the many factors at play in their heads (it’s not like Leia is wholly normal).
anghraine: luke taking vader's hand; text: balance (anakin and luke [balance])
I reblogged a gifset of the death scenes of the entire Skywalker family (from Shmi to Ben), and added:

...fuck. Their story always had Greek tragedy vibes, but now it's just ... ;_; ;_; ;_;
anghraine: anakin in rots looking down; text: lost (anakin [lost])
I love the Skywalkers, but every single one of them but Shmi is a walking yikes.

People will be like, "Well, MY Skywalker is pure and unproblematic" and it's just, nah, bro. Unless you're talking about Shmi, every single one of them—in-laws included—has had some moment of total fuckery. They are my eternal loves! But some of the posts about them I see are just ... uh, wow. And I have seen those posts about every one of them.
anghraine: luke taking vader's hand; text: balance (anakin and luke [balance])
I reblogged a set of manips of Shmi dying with Anakin, and Anakin with Luke, set to the words "we have wept for far too long"

I added:

Shmi-Anakin parallels in death are just ... I love them, but also ;_;
anghraine: a photo of emilie de ravin (a blonde, blue-eyed woman); text: lucy (lucy (emilie))
An anon said:

You updated the Lucy AU! Yaay! Is the "Lucy is not fully human" thing a reference to her being the granddaughter of the Force or something? Also it occurred to me that, here, the most important people for Vader are three women: his mother, his wife, and now his daughter

I replied:

You know, I honestly hadn’t thought of that! But yes, it’s very true—Shmi, Padmé, and now Lucy occupy a vast amount of space in his psyche.

[ETA 8/26/2021: they were right about my take on the Skywalkers' origins in that fic!]

anghraine: concept art of anakin, faded purple background; text: skywalker (anakin [skywalker])
I reblogged a nice comment on my elaborate Avatar/Star Wars plotbunny + the original (May 2013) post, which is:

I’ve written Avatar in the Star Wars ‘verse in varying ways, but what I really want is Star Wars in the Avatar verse. I mentioned some vague ideas before, but what I’d really to either see or get around to writing someday is this:

Air

- The Order of the White Lotus is highly visible and active as a body of warriors. Originally, they were neutral peacekeepers from all four nations, and guardians of the Avatar. Now they’ve largely evolved into defenders/diplomats for the Fire Nation. They also take command of all benders they find as young children and train them in the bending arts and traditions of the Order, but plenty are never found and have to make their own way.

- Qui-Gon Jinn is an earthbender and unorthodox Lotus warrior. Through some various adventures involving his apprentice Obi-Wan (an airbender) and the (disguised, non-bender) Southern Water Tribe chieftainess Padmé, he discovers that the Avatar, believed to be vanished from the earth for generations, has reincarnated as a young boy named Anakin Skywalker. Anakin is a suspiciously golden-eyed slave in the Earth Kingdom.

Some Skywalker quotes I enjoyed from the SW marathon:

1.

Leia to Anakin: Only you could be so bold. (ANH)

(uh huh)

2.

Anakin to Grievous: You’re shorter than I expected. (ROTS)

Leia to Tarkin: I recognized your foul stench when I was brought on board. (ANH)

3.

Luke: It just isn’t fair. (ANH)

Anakin: He just doesn’t understand! It’s not fair! (AOTC)

4.

Luke to Han: Between his howling and your blasting everything in sight, it’s a wonder the whole station doesn’t know we’re here! (ANH)

Leia to Han: Put that thing away! You’re going to get us all killed! (ANH)

5.

Leia to Han: You needn’t worry about your reward. If money is all that you love, then that’s what you’ll receive! (ANH)

Luke to Han: Well, take care of yourself, Han. I guess that’s what you’re best at, isn’t it? (ANH)

6.

Luke to Han: I knew you’d come back! I just knew it! (ANH)

Leia to Han: I knew there was more to you than money! (ANH)

7.

Anakin to Ozzel: You have failed me for the last time, Admiral. (ESB)

Luke to Jabba: That’s the last mistake you’ll ever make. (ROTJ)

8.

Anakin to Padmé: I saw my mother. I saw her as clearly as I see you now. She is suffering, Padmé. She is in pain … I must go. I have to help her! (AOTC)

Luke to Yoda: Han! Leia! … I saw a city in the clouds … they were in pain. …I’ve got to go to them. (ESB)

I've been terribly behind on everything and trying to focus(ish) on school, but I finally finished one of the responses to my last meme.

ladyhadhafang asked for "Every different person's thoughts as the Clone Wars begin," set in a SW/ATLA fusion 'verse, to the music of "This Is War." I declined to fit that into 100 words.

title: this is war (I am that brilliant)
verse: sw/atla

[Note: I personally like to imagine that Korra, Tenzin, and Lin Bei Fong invented space travel and the residents of the Avatar universe spread far and wide, until it became... y'know, Star Wars. But less white. Maybe it was later than that, though. You choose!]

So apparently I will never run out of these (eta: holy crap there were a lot of them). And I'm gearing up for my essay on the eighteenth-century sublime as a tool of masculine domination (we were supposed to use Northanger Abbey but I got the okay to use Sanditon instead) and a final for my Bible-as-literature class and a revision/four-page-explanation of revision, so.

I wonder if anybody can guess my favourite character. *whistling*

I meant to do the Austen one, really, but most of those who'd be interested have seen most of them already anyway, and ... I'll try and do a double Austen-Tolkien one Friday or Saturday, maybe. In the meanwhile, I've been wandering around tumblr and found a bunch of awesome Star Wars things (too many for this post!), mostly from one shiny tumblr -- though, to be honest, I don't perfectly remember everything I've posted before. Here's to hoping for very little overlap!

I was an hour late getting back home today, and to quote the Republicans, it's all Obama's fault.

No, really. The president flew into the Seattle airport just as our train arrived, and the Secret Service spent an hour going over it to make sure of ... something. I'm not sure how a train leaving the area could be construed as a threat to him, but whatever.

Also, I reallllly hate lj's new rich text editor, so I'm doing everything in dreamwidth and hoping it works. *crossing fingers*

I have a hilariously clumsy troll over at ff.net. I was just kind of 'lolwut,' but one of my anons flipped out (and called me honey, which was somewhere between cute and inappropriate). C'est la vie.

Tragically, we've had to drop our Netflix account, which means no more free ATLA! :( But hey, now I'll get the commentaries, since I'm totally going to buy it now. And I got four thousand dollars for this term, so I can afford it. In other news, omg circumbinary planet and they're totally calling it Tatooine because scientists are geeks and the ultimate in Ascended Fans. <3

Oh look, another acewank. Fail on both sides this time, hurrah, and the strangely inevitable discussions with non-asexuals taking it upon themselves to define asexuality for reals, and some aces rushing in to cry 'but we're not the bad ones!' while others try to take epic levels in douchebaggery, and something about how how non-asexual people are really just like demis. Apparently, non-asexual people customarily feel no sexual attraction whatsoever until they're well into a relationship. Uh, the more you know, I guess.

There's a cool-looking fic meme (that maybe two people will respond to, heh), but... I actually need to write, so I'm not going to do it yet. However, gdocs is down, so I'll do another with a clear conscience.

Anyone who follows my journal has probably realized that I love-hate Return of the Jedi and hate-hate the prequels and EU. You probably know that when it comes to things that don’t really fit with previously established canon, or that I just find awful, I prefer (1) objecting at great length and (2) assuming they never really happened anyway, to finding some way to integrate them into the same canon, rationalizing the inconsistency away. I go for tossing things into the Discontinuity Bin over Canon Welding any day.

It occurred to me that my paper on (*gasp*) women and Star Wars might be of slightly more interest to ... some of ... you all than to my professor or class, since it's basically ... feminist meta in APA format. Only formal and super-long (so, er, also known as an academic essay).

I'm trying to think if there's anything to warn for - um, it's fairly negative about the prequels, I guess, and feminism + Star Wars isn't really a pretty sight at all, but I can't imagine those are a surprise at this point. So ... here it is.
