She was proud and could be hard enough but she was true as steel.

Oct. 11th, 2021 02:38 pmI’ve been trawling my headcanons tag, and like… 99.9% of them are still dear to my soul.
[Later that day]
Eh, pulling them out of the tags:
- #1 at all times: Darcy is on the autistic spectrum (this is a pretty common headcanon, for kind of obvious reasons).
- Luke Skywalker uses the Skywalkers’ ancestral language with Anakin on the second Death Star; Anakin uses the language when he proclaims “I am your father,” but resolutely sticks to Basic on DSII until he’s reclaimed himself and is dying (I wrote a fic about it here).
- The Stewards’ origins as 1) a family of ultimately royal origin and 2) the descendants of a Faithful family in Númenor come together with the House of Húrin originally going back to a Faithful family established by Númenor’s first princess, Tindómiel.
- Vanozza dei Cattanei in The Borgias is Castilian, a courtesan out of Toledo originally named Juana de Castañeda.
- Darcy and Elizabeth have separate bedrooms along the lines of Congreve’s Millamant and Mirabell.
- The Elvish aesthetic of the First Age is primarily ancient Egyptian and ancient Greek (to go with Tolkien’s Egyptian-Byzantine-Roman influences with the Dúnedain).
- Kuvira from Legend of Korra chose to call herself ‘Kuvira’ after she was abandoned by her parents, guided by her quasi-foster mother Suyin Beifong.

hello!! I was wondering if you have any plans to continue writing for the borgias? not to pressure you or anything!! we get dark, only to shine is my favorite fic ever and I reread it all the time. happy new year!💓
I replied:
Belatedly, thank you very much! I’m glad to hear that it’s still enjoyable, even stopping in kind of the middle of nowhere.
I’d like to say I’d definitely come back, since it was probably the most enjoyable fandom I’ve ever been in, but I honestly don’t know. These days, I spend my fannish time going pretty much wherever the impulse of the moment takes me. Sometimes it takes me back to previous fandoms—I always go flitting back to Austen/Tolkien/Star Wars, for instance. So I could end up wandering back. But also, I might not.
Sorry—I’d like to be clearer, but that’s about where things stand.
[ETA 9/17/2021: I probably won't, unfortunately, since I had a lot of plans for it, but I do have a lot of respect for people who are willing to admit outright that they like that fic and want more of it/like it.]

Sep. 9th, 2021 09:27 amI did a meme awhile back that includes listing your most popular works by kudos, and it's like:
1. Season of Courtship: just over 2000 kudos. Nothing I've written out of my teens will ever compare, apparently. [Dated to 2006 on AO3, but actually written earlier.]
2. But Thou Didst Not Leave His Soul In Hell: 1429 kudos. 841 words, so ... okay. [2012]
3. per ardua ad astra: 1354 kudos. Yay, a longfic that I wrote in the comparatively recent past made the list! It definitely benefited from being for what was then a big ship in a megafandom, but I was mostly pretty happy with it despite some issues and continuity errors. [updated 2018]
4. we get dark, only to shine: lol, I knew it'd show up here somewhere. 1301 kudos. It used to be far and away my most popular fic, actually, despite (because of?) centering problematic characters on the problematic train to Problematicville. (The canon sibling incest pairing is but one of the dubious features.) I did put a lot of fairly serious historical research into it, though, which overlapped with my RL research enough to get a paper written and sort of published. *\0/* [updated 2016]
5. tolerably well acquainted: 1141 kudos. And here's one that I'm uncomplicatedly happy about. It's just canon expanded from Pemberley onwards, but I pored over the novel to try and make sure everything fit well enough, and tried to strike some middle ground between a pseudo-Austenian style and my own (which, despite my many Austen fics, I always find fairly difficult). But I'm very, very fond of it and hope to finish it one day. [updated 2020]

A nice thing!
Aug. 24th, 2021 11:16 amI got a lovely comment on we get dark, only to shine from a person who mentioned crying at Jeronima's death and then wished me well generally. It's ... :')
(For context: we get dark, only to shine is the longest and most #problematic of my longfics, an AU of The Borgias that brings in as many historical details as I could unearth and weave in without breaking the show's canon. Jeronima is a not-quite-OC; Jerònima de Borja/Girolama Borgia was a real person, but I make her Rodrigo's niece instead of his daughter, move her death to a later date, and manufactured her personality and history out of nothing except my own purposes. So I'm quite touched when people care about the subplot that turns on her death, and about her death scene in particular.)

Dec. 13th, 2018 07:35 pmAn anon on Tumblr asked:
Do you ever regret Showtime's decision to cross the line with C&L in season 3? Or does the story line necessitate it? I thought Jordan was pretty adamant about NOT taking their relationship in that direction.

So, every portrayal of Cesare and Lucrezia Borgia that I’ve seen, whatever the take on their relationship, involves that relationship falling apart in the end and the two of them turning on each other.

Dec. 4th, 2018 08:55 pmA newish Tumblr thing I noticed going around awhile back: posting moodboards/aesthetic posts/similar stuff for your own fics. It felt incredibly self-indulgent at first, but ... what is Tumblr for if not self-indulgence? So I took it for a spin, except instead of making them for updates, I sorted my fics by kudos and made manips (or some approximation thereof) for the first five.

I answered a Borgias ask with excited babbling, per the usual, and a couple of people clearly started running through my tag. Occasionally people apologize for a cavalcade of likes out of nowhere, but I'm always very charmed by it.
(It does seem to happen way more for the Borgias than anything else. Such is the curse of medium-sized fandoms!)
Anyway, they liked this photoset, and I honestly think it might be my all time favourite of mine. I am SO grudgy about people who sneer at the show without appearing to grasp the concept of adaptation, then attribute this level of devotion to "well, they had a big budget." For television, it was pretty big, yes—and no, you don't automatically get something that looks like this by throwing money at it. They earned their Emmy, dammit.

The Borgias political AU is going to be a thing. I don't know what level of thing, but ... a Thing.
