ngl I have yet to read any justification for Aragorn's argument that Théoden's edicts should not apply to him in Rohan that I didn't find deeply annoying.

I just saw yet another one on Tumblr, which ultimately was not very different from the rest. The argument was that given actual Anglo-Saxon customs, it is Théoden's requirement that everyone relinquish their weapons (often great heirlooms, which Andúril is) that is unreasonable, not Aragorn's distaste for doing so. In other permutations, it's Háma who is being short-sighted in not accepting Aragorn's greater authority. But essentially the idea is that Théoden's command itself is sketchy and Aragorn is the one being reasonable.

None of this addresses the actual problem, though, which Háma himself does.

Yes, Théoden's insistence that warriors relinquish their swords or other weapons is clearly framed as dubious and a marker of Gríma's malign influence over him, much like the use of the Rohirrim's language as a shibboleth. This is perfectly evident even without bringing in Anglo-Saxon history. Yes, Aragorn has good reason to be uneasy about leaving Andúril lying around with a random door warden. None of that is the problem.

Aragorn does not only argue that Théoden's decree with regard to weaponry in his hall is a bad idea. He argues that it is not his (Aragorn's) will to give up his weapon and that "it is not clear to me" that Théoden's will as king of Rohan should override his own as heir of Elendil "of Gondor."

There are a number of issues at play here:

sulfin-evend responded to the April 13th 2019 post here:

The idea that Elrond is against Gondor somehow is a reoccurring idea in the tumblr fandom. So I went back to reread the Council of Elrond to make sense of it, and I can barely find one phrase that could be considered anti Gondor. Am I missing something?

I replied:

I think we must be interpreting Elrond’s description of modern Gondor very differently. For me, going on about how they’ve dwindled from imperial heights through intermarriage with inferior races is high octane Yikes and certainly negative towards modern Gondor. Especially given that it’s said with a Gondorian right there.

(It’s partly Tolkien being Tolkien, but only partly IMO: we later hear that the inclusion of non-Númenóreans in Gondor has contributed to the strength of Gondor’s people and is a way in which the Stewards were wiser than the kings.)

They also said:

Love the commentary on the names. Also i love that Elured is supposed to be a Taliska and Sindarin mixed name. The half elves do honour the human side of their heritage

I replied:

Thanks! I think Tolkien ultimately decided Taliska had died out by that point (since “The Problem of Ros” didn’t work out). But yeah, the peredhil are pretty consistently respectful towards their human heritage.

They responded to this post:

Headcanon; Gondor is full of various languages and bilingual people. Everyone knows Westron, but some speak Sindarin or one of many native ancient languages, words from dead languages come up in regional dialects.

I replied:

Total agreement! We know there are at least some place-names that have elements derived from indigenous languages, so it’s possible to extrapolate from that, and of course, many of the soldiers in Minas Tirith shout at each other in Sindarin. When we hear that people burst out singing in “all the ways of the City,” I like to imagine that it’s not just musical styles but all these different languages at once.

[ETA 3/18/2024: In the interests of full disclosure, they did later respond again re: Elrond and Gondor, but I find Elrond's characterization of modern Gondor so intrinsically indefensible that I had no interest in engaging further.]

I’m not sure why it is, but one of the little tics that I’ve noticed in student work/fic/video games/etc is omitting commas around names.

That is, usually when using a name, it’s like: “Isn’t that right, Ana?” or “Zahra, this belongs to you.”

But I’ve seen the commas left out a lot across various media (“Isn’t that right Ana?”). It’s not some terrible wrongdoing or anything; I’m just curious why that usage in particular gets dropped so often and so widely.

I reblogged a thread started by someone complaining about the English pronunciation of "queue" ignoring most letters in the word, someone else pointing out that English "stole" it from French and it follows the rules of French orthography, the thread continuing with further English-French spats about the complicated rules of French orthography vs English's chaotic evil approach (not how they put it, lol), and my friend [personal profile] tulina (from Catalonia) saying "Fight! Fight! Fight!"

I said:

On the one hand: fair. On the other hand: it’s mainly French that screwed up English spelling, so…

Tagged: #normans: we have created a new form of speech! #everyone else: you fucked up a perfectly good language is what you did. look at it. it's got anxiety #though seriously it is one hundred percent fair to judge anglophones for complaining about anyone's orthography :P

[personal profile] heckofabecca responded to this post:

what do you mean, it doesn’t make sense???

I replied:

Well, there’s a basic quandary that Tolkien wrangled with:

1. Sindarin is used conversationally in Gondor.

2. Gondorian Sindarin is largely unchanged from classic Sindarin.

Huh, my very anodyne Tumblr post about preferring "liberation" to "freedom" apparently bothered people? Usually people say nothing, but so far there's:

- serious responses about the different functions of the words
- someone aghast at my using "US American"
- a correction
- someone inquiring if maybe it's just classism on my part because of the Tumblr-oversimplified schema of OE words = peasantry and French words = ruling class

Things are going pretty well!

- I mentioned some trouble with my bff under f-lock, but he hasn't hinted at any issues, so that's good.

- I also got sucked back into Game of Thrones this season—not in a fic/meta way, but in a reading lots of fic and reblogging things way

- Suppressing the urge to respond to every 'yeah pretty much except *quibble*' to a LOK post with NO YOU'RE WRONG THIS IS WHY. But I stand by my opinion that a) Korra was completely justified in her anger at Tonraq and Tenzin in S2, b) Korra was completely unjustified in her treatment of Mako at the same time, c) lighting unarmed people on fire is always morally dubious, d) LOK fandom was absurdly awful in their interpretations of S1-S2, and e) a lot of that came down to ill-advised pacing and structure in those seasons. WE WILL NEVER AGREE ABOUT THIS THERE IS NO POINT.

- I followed a long-time supportive follower who turns out to be into a lot of the same things and also a SJ person taking on the extremes of SJ Tumblr. She reblogs and writes a lot of anti-gatekeeping, so I've ended up reading and appreciating those, but it also introduced me to the fuckery of 'SGA' rhetoric, which as an ace lesbian raised Mormon is ... not a trigger per se, but certainly viscerally repulsive. So I've ranted about that a bit. I'm honestly very, very relieved that everyone I know (and some I don't) have been supportive about it because THE FUCK???? (I'm also annoyed as a quietly androgynous person, but the Actual Conversion Therapy Term component kiiiinda overwhelms everything else.)

- Practicing my Spanish on Duolingo, this involves occasional screaming. LOOK LA AMO IS COMPLETELY LEGIT.

- istg I will finish the already-late chapter of my longfic (we get dark, only to shine, my Very Problematic and yet also very pretentious Borgias fic)

AKA: This scene is taking forever and I'm tired of writing. So I did that accent meme that went around awhile, instead, here.

Watching it now -- uh, I'm not actually a vampire, guys. Or wearing bizarre make-up (or any). It's just that I keep as many drapes down as I can, because I don't like sunlight, and that makes the lighting weird.

On second thought, that might not be the most convincing argument ever. My reflection, however, assures me that (1) it exists, and (2) I don't actually look undead.

The questions are:

I just posted The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker to the au_bigbang comm. And AO3, obviously. It's six o'clock in the morning and I have yet to feel the need to sleep, but it's done!

You know, for now. Since it's the first story in a series I imagine will go on a bit. I've already thought of an AU omg what is my brain. And there is art and I'm done I'm done I'm done I'm done omg I can't even work myself up to worrying about the reception because done done done.

Okay, maybe the lack of sleep is messing with me. I've already had to take an inhaler because refusing to sleep generates a creepy asthma cough that bothered my stepfather. But it doesn't matter! Because -- I don't know if I've been too subtle about this -- but I'm done!

Oh, right, links. The story is here. I will link to the au_bigbang entry with the art as soon as it pops up, ha.
